We guess our big shock came today when NC State Sidney Lowe, despite wearing a very ugly red sports jacket, led his team to beat arguably the best team in the country.
Join us for today's rundown:
1. Florida: at home against UT. Let's face it, the Vols cannot win a big game like this without Chris Lofton and his 21 point average. Gators roll. Gators bite Volunteers, but we are still watching the chink we see in Florida's armor. We have noted that in big games, with big leads, UF has the habit of letting teams beat them in the second half. Would UT have won with Chris Lofton? Yes.
2. Wisconsin: no doubt they will beat Northwestern at home. It's the little things that get the job done. Yes, Wisconsin out-rebounded the Wildcats, but note that the Badgers only had 5 personal fouls the entire game. When you can pound the boards AND limit your rebounds--well, let's just say the Win-consin fans need to be buying plane tickets to Atlanta.
3. North Carolina: play at NC State. Yes, the Heels are very good, and yes, the Wolf Pack is not so good. NC State is coming off a win against #18 Virginia Tech, so they could be pumped-up enough to be close, and even lead, at the end of the first half. But, we see the Heels winning this one. Sorry Sidney. They were pumped up, and they did lead at the end of the first half. The problem for the Heels is that NC State led at the end of the second half as well. Credit good coaching for the Wolfpack, and check out the lack of a sense of urgency for UNC. Six points off the bench for Carolina didn't help either. Roy takes the rims down for the next practice as he re-teaches defense this week.
4. Ohio State: play at Michigan State. The Spartans played OSU close last week, but the Buckeyes will not lose this game. And they won. Oden rocked with a double-d.
5. UCLA: at home against Oregon State. Another win for the Bruins. Bruins embarrass Oregon State by almost 50.
6. Kansas: play at home against #8 Texas A&M. Best game of the day. A pretty even match-up. But we see the Jayhawks winning. NOTE: this will be close, and we concede that we may miss this game. It was the best game of the day, and it was close, and we did miss it. So life goes in the wonderful world of college basketball.
9. Oregon: away at USC. The Trojans surprise the Ducks and get the upset. The Trojans did get the upset by shooting 60% from the floor.
11. Butler: get Wisconsin-Milwaukee at home. Yawn. Butler wins again. Please wake us up when Butler's conference schedule is over so we can adequately judge them. Beating a team with a sorry record does not a good March team make.
12. Memphis: host SMU. SMU has depth, but no real scorers. Memphis wins. As we said, SMU doesn't have anyone who can score. One Mustang in double figures as Memphis rides the Mustangs to a win.
13. Nevada: at Hawaii. The only benefit to playing in the WAC is that you get to go to Hawaii once each season. Nevada wins. Sluggish and sunburned Nevada struggles but manages a win at Hawaii. Aloha.
14. Oklahoma State: at Colorado. The Cowboys win against the woeful Buffaloes. Colorado State was 5-13 coming into this game but out-rebounded OK State as they throw the Cowboys for a loss. Who knew?
15. Marquette: play Providence at home. The Friars beat Marquette in early January, but the Golden Eagles will have no problem with this team at home. Marquette wins. Marquette struggled a bit, but won their 7th in a row. Marquette is back on track after losing focus in early January.
16. Air Force: play Wyoming at home. The Cowboys are really not too bad, and the seldom get blown-out by good teams. Heck, they only lost by 2 to Air Force back in January. BUT, Air Force is looking to avenge their loss to the Mormons (BYU) and they will win. It could be close, though. Not even close as Air Force wins but is trying to find their chemistry. They are 20-3 for goodness sakes.
17. Washington State: away at Arizona State. ASU is 0-10 in the Pac-10. No need to say more as Washington State wins. ASU is now 0-11 in the Pac-10, but they almost won by slowing the game down.
18. Virginia Tech: at Boston College. This will be a fun game to watch. BC is tied with the Hokies and Virginia for second in the ACC. We call an upset here. The Eagles win at home. And wow were we right! BC controlled this game from the tip.
19. Notre Dame: at South Florida. No contest. The Fighting Irish win. So, how DID South Florida manage to win this game? Rebounding and defense win games. We missed this one.
20. Alabama: play South Carolina at home. While Bama should not be anywhere near the top-25, they will beat the Gamecocks. Bama won, as we said, but they continue to prove their mediocrity as they only win by 3. Big Dance for Bama? Yes. Second round for Bama? No.
21. Clemson: play at Georgia Tech. Time has proven that the Tigers are all hype, and the Yellow Jackets will be tough coming off 4 straight losses (they lost to Weak Forest for gosh sakes). But the Tigers are also coming off a couple of tough losses. We will have to side with the IPTAY boosters and give Clemson the win. Shame on us for not listening to that little voice inside. Even as we made this prediction yesterday we doubted it. IPTAY go home.
22. Arizona: plays Washington at home. Not a good 7 days for the Wildcats as they have lost 2 straight at home. They will not not lose this one. Wildcats tear up the Huskies. Arizona not only tore up the Huskies, they ripped them a new one. Lute Olson is sleeping a bit better tonight.
23. Texas: play Kansas State at home. Another game to watch. Kansas State pulls it out to beat Texas. True to form, we knew this one was correct. Kansas State pulled it out to win by 1.
24. Kentucky: play away at Arkansas: The Wildcats are not a top-25 team, and the Razorbacks will prove this as they beat Kentucky. We're guessing that Ashley Judd brings her good karma to Kentucky road games as the Wildcats win this game after being down by double digits.
25. Indiana: play at Iowa. Easy game for the Hoosiers. Indiana wins. Not as easy as we thought as the Hoosiers lose.
25. UNLV: at BYU. The Mormons fall to the sinners as the Rebels win. Apparently the sinners were up too late last night hitting all the bars in Salt Lake, and the Mormons went to bed early and crushed UNLV by 27.
So, we went 15-8 today (65%). That might get us an NIT Bid, but it isn't good enough for us. We're going to work on our scoring this next week.
Tomorrow? One game:
10. Duke: Florida State travels to Durham. Duke wins.
